It’s very insane to think that this first blog entry finds me in The Netherlands. Having lived all my life in Argentina, suddenly the possibility of an extraordinary trip appeared. The reason was only one: love.
The situation was curious. The circumstances in which I met my girlfriend were very random. Many variables were aligned to allow us to be together.
One of this variables it’s decidedly important facing this new project that I’m starting with this post. I had the chance to leave everything behind in order to come to The Netherlands.
But what it means “Leave everything behind”? If I think about it, I see that the only things that I had to consider were the fact that I’d be away from my family, friends… and maybe a good barbecue.
I don’t have to consider my work because I didn’t have to ask for a short leave, neither to quit. I just packed my bags with my laptop, and let know about my trip to my clients. They only had to know that I was not going to be available for less than a day because of the travel. Then, I got on the plane and flighted from South America to Europe.
It has been almost a month since I’m in Europe. I’m in the mid trip because in a couple of weeks I have to come back to Argentina. In the past month I had time to share with my girlfriend and travel to a couple of cities of The Netherlands. But at the same time, I’ve never stopped working. I’ve kept my routine as usual and I’ve delivered work to my clients as used to.
How it is possible that I can do this? Why I can change the course of my life in such and aspect without compromising my job?
Do you know the answer? Yes. It’s because I’m a freelancer.
To travel and to work from any part of the world is just a little one of many freedoms. And I can tell you many of these freedoms:
- To manage my own schedule
- To negotiate delivery dates.
- To negotiate prices with the clientes.
- To say “No” to a project or a client.
- To manage my rest times.
I’m sure that there are many freedoms more that I don’t remember right now.
A way of life
After my travel expierence in Europe, I realized that to be a freelancer is much more than a working mode. It’s a way of life.
I’ve been working for companies for many years and I’ve learned so much. All those expierences were decisive to become the professional that I am today.
I got my freedom three years ago and I started to walk this path as a freelancer. A path that gave me so much freedom. A freedom that I haven’t before.
I started to write about this subject and others related to programming in Medium. The recepction was good so I wanted to have my own space to keep posting this kind of content.
In this blog, I am going to write about expieriences, thoughts, and everything that I’ll learn about this path. Also, I’ll tell you about another subjects that I love, like education, technology, movies and literature. But the focus will always be set in the freelancer way of life.
I want to invite you to participate of the blog through comments and follow me in the social media.
I am a native spanish speaker but I’m learning to write in English. I could just translate all my blog posts in Google Translate, but I prefer to do everything by myself. I think it’s a good practice. Since, I’m learning, I want to apologize in advance if you find errors in my writing. I promise I’ll improve.
